Lawyer arrested after fleeing with 300 million won of client money

Prosecutors have apprehended a lawyer who allegedly embezzled 300 million won from a client and fled. The lawyer disappeared before a scheduled court hearing for a pre-detention warrant. Prosecutors and investigators from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office pursued the lawyer, eventually arresting him in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province, after a two-day stakeout.

The lawyer is accused of misappropriating client funds, which were held in escrow, for personal use, including paying his law firm's employee salaries. The case was initially investigated by the police, who forwarded it to the prosecution without detention. However, upon reviewing the case files, the prosecution team initiated a supplementary investigation to trace the exact destination of the embezzled funds.

During this investigation, it was revealed that the lawyer was already facing trial for similar charges and had multiple other complaints filed against him. Citing the risk of recidivism, the prosecution sought a detention warrant. When the lawyer failed to appear for the warrant review hearing and absconded, the prosecution team decided to track him down directly rather than wait for a police manhunt.

Using the lawyer's vehicle tracking data, CCTV footage, and credit card records, the prosecutors and investigators identified his last known location in Jincheon and Eumseong. They conducted an intensive two-day search in the area, leading to his capture. The lawyer reportedly confessed to additional charges during his interrogation. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office stated its commitment to thoroughly investigating the case and ensuring substantial compensation for the victims.
