Lawyer Seeks Access to Client Facing U.S. Extradition Over Romance Scam Allegations

The legal representative for Frederick Kumi, popularly known as 'Abu Trica,' has made an urgent oral application to the High Court in Accra. The lawyer seeks an order directing the Attorney-General to grant him access to his client, whose whereabouts have been unknown since a court approved his extradition to the United States.

Kumi is wanted in the U.S. to face charges in connection with an alleged $8 million romance scam. The extradition order was granted following the High Court's dismissal of Kumi's earlier legal challenge against the process. Security officers reportedly rearrested him immediately after that decision to facilitate the extradition.

Counsel for Abu Trica informed the court on July 6, 2026, that despite the extradition order, his client's location remains undisclosed. He stated that a written request to the Attorney-General for access had also gone unanswered. The court temporarily suspended proceedings to await a response from the Attorney-General before ruling on the access order.

Meanwhile, a separate application by Kumi's legal team seeking to stay the execution of the extradition order has been adjourned to July 9, 2026. The defense team has indicated their intention to pursue a challenge against the extradition decision at the Supreme Court.
