Lebanese president congratulates Trump, seeks continued U.S. support

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun extended congratulations to U.S. President Donald Trump on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence. In a message to Trump, Aoun expressed appreciation for the long-standing relationship between Lebanon and the United States, highlighting shared principles and values.

"Today, this relationship is strengthened thanks to your determination and tireless efforts to restore security in the Middle East in general, and in Lebanon in particular," Aoun stated, according to the Lebanese state news agency NNA. He urged Trump to "continue to firmly support the just causes of Lebanon, as well as its institutions, its army, and its people." Aoun expressed hope for moving beyond wars and tragedies toward a new era of hope, peace, and stability.

The Lebanese president's message alluded to the U.S.-mediated framework agreement signed on June 26, which aims to establish peace between Lebanon and Israel. Aoun views this as a "first step" toward regaining Lebanon's full sovereignty and pledged to continue working toward that goal. However, the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah has condemned the pact as "a humiliation, a shame, and a renunciation of sovereignty," vowing to continue fighting until Israeli troops withdraw from southern Lebanon.

The U.S. Embassy in Beirut also issued a statement marking the anniversary, reiterating its support for the Lebanese people as they forge a future of "peace, prosperity, and long-awaited hope."
