Lebanon can join Abraham Accords after Hezbollah disarmament, Sunni MP says

Lebanon could sign peace with Israel and join the Abraham Accords once Hezbollah is disarmed, Lebanese Sunni lawmaker Fouad Makhzoumi told Middle East 24. He said the group must no longer be able to use Lebanon as a “launching pad” for attacks against Israel.

Makhzoumi, who has previously urged the Lebanese military to confront Hezbollah’s arms trafficking with a checkpoint in Beirut’s Dahieh neighborhood, said diplomatic relations and trade would become possible once “our side, as Lebanese, disarms the militias.” He argued that Lebanon currently has a border outside state control, allowing weapons to be smuggled into and out of the country.

“I don't see any reason why we cannot sign peace with Israel,” Makhzoumi said, adding that Lebanon could “achieve” membership in the Abraham Accords. He presented the issue as part of a broader economic and political challenge, saying recovery and future growth depend on fighting corruption in the judicial system and dismantling what he called Hezbollah’s “parallel state.”

Makhzoumi said investors would need more than financial reforms before returning. Lebanon must have rules applied fairly to every investor, one military force representing the country, one law applied equally to all, a banking system that meets international regulations and protection from being dragged into war for ideological reasons, he said.

His comments came as Lebanon’s central bank announced that France-based Alvarez & Marsal would audit transactions from October 1, 2019, through December 31, 2023. Lebanon scored 23 out of 100 on Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, ranking 153rd among 182 countries. Makhzoumi also pointed to possible regional investment, noting that the United Arab Emirates, an Abraham Accords signatory, has become a major investor in Lebanon. An Emirati delegation of more than 80 prominent figures visited last month, and the two countries signed a memorandum aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. Makhzoumi said he was already speaking with people interested in investing in southern Lebanon.
