"Left Alliance" Calls for Protection of Diaspora After Citizen's Death in Italy

Morocco's "Left Alliance" has voiced strong condemnation and sorrow over the death of a Moroccan citizen in Italy, allegedly due to excessive force by Italian police. The alliance extended its condolences to the victim's family and the broader Moroccan community abroad.

In a statement, the alliance emphasized that safeguarding the dignity and right to life of Moroccans living overseas is paramount and not subject to compromise. This tragic incident, they argue, highlights the escalating danger of hate speech, systematic harassment, and institutionalized violence against migrants in Europe.

The protection of members of the Moroccan community and the preservation of their dignity and their sacred right to life is not a subject for bargaining or neglect.

The alliance called for a firm political and diplomatic response to prevent foreign security agencies from disregarding the lives of Moroccan citizens. They also linked the protection of citizens abroad to the state of rights and freedoms within Morocco, suggesting that a decline in domestic freedoms weakens the credibility of official discourse.

This tragedy brings back to the forefront the seriousness of the escalating hate speech, systematic harassment, and institutional violence against migrants in Europe.

Demands include an independent judicial inquiry into the incident, with the Moroccan consulate participating as a civil party through specialized legal counsel. The state is also called upon to fully cover the costs of a counter-autopsy, legal proceedings, and the repatriation of the victim's body with dignity. Furthermore, the alliance proposed the establishment of a national fund to support victims of discrimination and institutional violence.

Additional proposals involve activating a 24/7 hotline and emergency cells within consulates for swift intervention in cases of arbitrary arrest. They also advocate for including a "dignity and human rights" clause in cooperation agreements with European countries and ensuring the presence of Moroccan diplomacy and human rights organizations throughout investigations. The alliance concluded by urging the creation of an independent observatory to monitor discrimination and racism, alongside enhanced partnerships with international bodies like the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) and the Human Rights Council.
