Legal case became the first of its kind in film 'Karla'

The film "Karla," directed by Christina Tournatzés and based on real events, centers on a groundbreaking legal case from 1962. In that year, amidst the student revolts, a 12-year-old girl independently sought legal action to report her father for sexual abuse. At a time when incest was punishable but a child's testimony held little weight against the father's authority, the chances of the case reaching court were minimal. However, her persistence led to a landmark legal battle, making it the first case of its kind. Screenwriter Yvonne Görlach spent years interviewing the real "Karla" before finding the right director in Tournatzés, who previously received acclaim for her 2019 short film "Der Transport," also based on a true story about refugees who died in a transport vehicle. Despite the heavy subject matter, "Karla" is perceived as a "bright film." This is largely attributed to the exceptional performance of its young lead, Elise Krieps, who conveys profound emotion through subtle acting, allowing the unspoken to speak volumes. Director Tournatzés skillfully guided Krieps to deliver a performance of remarkable authenticity. Krieps's co-star, Rainer Bock, plays a judge who initially shows little enthusiasm for taking on a case seemingly doomed to fail. However, he becomes increasingly moved by the situation and eventually offers comfort to the young girl. The film's underlying theme emphasizes the power of belief, echoing the words of Jewish poet Mascha Kaléko, quoted in the film: "one only needs one person who believes in you for you to get vindication."
