Legendary Athletics Coach Gerd Osenberg Dies at 89

The German athletics community is mourning the death of Gerd Osenberg, a celebrated coach who passed away Monday morning at the age of 89. His long and impactful career saw him guide multiple generations of athletes to national and international success.

Osenberg was instrumental in the careers of several prominent German athletes. Among his most notable protégés were Heide Ecker-Rosendahl and Ulrike Nasse-Meyfarth, both of whom won two Olympic gold medals. High jumper Heike Henkel also achieved Olympic glory under his tutelage, winning gold at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Heide Ecker-Rosendahl, who herself won Olympic gold in the long jump and sprint relay, was present at Osenberg's bedside along with his family to bid farewell. She confirmed his passing to the German Press Agency. Osenberg had been a dedicated coach at his club, TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, for decades and also contributed his expertise to the German Athletics Federation (DLV).
