Legislator Slams KMT Chair's 'Taiwan Not a Country' Remark, Demands Party Clarification

A legislator from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has strongly criticized Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Sylvia Chang for her recent statement that "Taiwan has never been independent and is not a country." DPP legislator Hsu Chih-chieh demanded that KMT leaders, including Taipei mayoral candidate Chiang Wan-an and Kaohsiung mayoral candidate Ko Chih-en, immediately declare their positions on Taiwan's national status.

Taiwan, is our country! The people of Taiwan elect their own president and legislators, have their own democratic system, central government, and defense system. The 23.5 million people live together on this land, which is the true reality of Taiwan and fully meets the requirements of a nation. Whether it is the Republic of China or Taiwan, both represent this political entity and are our eternal mother.

Hsu asserted that Taiwan is undeniably a sovereign nation, citing its democratically elected president and legislators, its own democratic system, central government, and defense capabilities. He emphasized that 23.5 million people live on this land, forming a political entity that is represented by either the Republic of China or Taiwan, serving as their "eternal mother."

"KMT Chairwoman Sylvia Chang, who licks communism to an extreme, shamelessly denigrates Taiwan's international status!" Hsu exclaimed, questioning if such actions are meant to impress Xi Jinping. He directly challenged Ko Chih-en and Chiang Wan-an, demanding they clarify whether they recognize Taiwan as a country and accusing them of deceiving the public if they remain silent.

Hsu urged KMT figures, especially those running for mayor in the six major cities, to speak out. He specifically called on Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu to lead the "Republic of China faction" in affirming that "Republic of China Taiwan is a sovereign country," thereby guiding Taiwan out of its current legislative predicament and resisting perceived "dark forces" manipulating the legislature. Hsu concluded by stating that Taiwan's future should be decided by its people, not by any party chairman defining it.
