Letter: Slovenian politicians are putting the country at risk by deepening divisions

Slovenian politicians are putting the country at risk by deliberately deepening divisions, inciting hostility, engaging in endless disputes and acting arbitrarily, argues letter writer Janez Zadravec Klugler.

He says European politicians are also continuing to divide citizens instead of bringing them together, while issuing threats and urging preparations for war. In his view, diplomacy is disappearing from international affairs, particularly because of the United States, while the rule of law and mutual respect are breaking down.

Zadravec Klugler warns that accelerated arms buildups and rapid climate change raise the question of whether humanity will be destroyed sooner by weapons or by natural disasters. He says Europe, led by the European Union, is losing its purpose and that what he calls catastrophic foreign policy, especially toward Russia, is leading toward a destructive war.

Current European politicians, instead of bringing the citizens of Europe together, are continuing with division, threats and calls to prepare for war.

He also criticizes Slovenia’s domestic politics, saying the country is wasting time, energy and opportunities for independence, self-reliance and development. He blames a hunger for money and power for the erosion of social values, and says the ideological divide is being deliberately widened. He further argues that the leadership of the Slovenian church is contributing to the division.

The letter says rising populism, nationalism and fascism could lead to renewed disputes over borders and demands for territorial change. Zadravec Klugler asks Slovenian politicians whether they notice, in neighboring countries, growing nostalgia for past territories and former borders.
