Levin tells High Court advancing permanent district court appointments not realistic pre-elections

Justice Minister Yariv Levin has informed the High Court of Justice that proceeding with permanent appointments to the Haifa and Beersheba district courts before the upcoming elections is no longer realistic. He proposed moving forward with temporary appointments to address the courts’ most urgent needs.

Levin’s position was filed in response to the court’s inquiry regarding his plans for these judicial vacancies. He chairs the Judicial Selection Committee and stated that after considering the court’s comments, the political calendar, and the need for thorough candidate examination, publishing names and convening the committee for permanent selections is not feasible at this stage. The process requires names to be published, followed by a waiting period before the committee can vote.

Instead, Levin indicated he is coordinating with the Courts Administration director to fill immediate gaps. Temporary appointments will be made to the Haifa and Beersheba district courts under the law. These temporary appointments are expected to be completed after the Judicial Selection Committee meets on June 25, June 30, and July 1, to address various court vacancies, including those in magistrates’ courts and senior registrar positions.

Levin requested the High Court dismiss the petition based on these proposed temporary measures, which he believes will address the urgent judicial needs before the election freeze takes effect. The court had previously pressed Levin on why these specific vacancies were excluded from his current appointment plan.
