Lewis Farms Recreation Centre nearing completion in west Edmonton

The Lewis Farms Recreation Centre in west Edmonton is nearing its completion, with residents of the Rosenthal neighborhood eagerly anticipating its opening in 2028. Media were recently given a tour of the construction site, showcasing the progress on what will be a significant community hub.

Initially approved in 2021 with a target cost of $311.3 million, the project faced delays and escalating costs due to pandemic-related inflation. The city estimated the cost to rise to $427 million for the original plan. To bring the project back within budget, the city adjusted the scope and size between 2022 and 2025, working with industry partners to simplify design elements. This value engineering brought the estimated cost down to $309.3 million, with the current budget sitting around $343 million.

The revised plan prioritizes programming and daily public access for residents. While the aquatic center will include a 50-meter pool, it will not have the deeper pool and higher diving platforms that would have been necessary for specialized, high-performance competitions. The facility will offer a wide range of amenities, including a public library, a twin arena, an indoor playground and daycare, a fitness center, a running track, and a double gymnasium. Space has also been allocated for a future daycare and commercial retail units.
