LGBT Collective Files Discrimination Complaint Against FCE Director Taibo II

The literary collective Novísimxs has formally lodged a complaint with Mexico's National Council for the Prevention of Discrimination (CONAPRED) against Paco Ignacio Taibo II, the director of the Economic Culture Fund (FCE). The action stems from what the collective describes as discriminatory remarks, hate speech, and stigmatization directed at them by Taibo II in various public media outlets.

The complaint specifically addresses Taibo II's characterization of Novísimxs and other groups as "a couple of groups from the gay sector and illiterate." He further questioned their understanding, suggesting that if they were well-read, they would know there had been no reported incidents of homophobia within the FCE in the past seven years. Taibo II also reportedly downplayed a protest held at the FCE's Rosario Castellanos bookstore on July 3rd concerning a reported case of homophobia, dismissing the demonstrators as "very minoritarian."

Novísimxs vehemently denies Taibo II's assertion that their protest was instigated or influenced by Víctor Santana, an editorial sub-manager who had reported homophobia. The collective's complaint clarifies that their demonstration was an independent action, undertaken due to what they perceive as "systematic homophobia" within the FCE and its management. They provided documentation, including a report from EL UNIVERSAL on August 11, 2026, to support their claims and refute Taibo II's narrative.

The collective emphasizes that Taibo II's position as the head of a Mexican state cultural institution lends significant weight and reach to his public statements. They argue that the dissemination of such remarks through widely accessed public and private media channels amplifies their harmful impact and potential to damage the reputation and standing of the LGBT community. The complaint seeks to address these alleged acts of discrimination and hate speech.
