LH stockpiles 100 modular homes for disaster victims, ready for immediate transport and installation

South Korea's Land and Housing Corporation (LH) is set to stockpile 100 modular homes to provide rapid housing for victims of disasters such as wildfires and heavy rains. This initiative aims to ensure immediate shelter for those displaced by unforeseen events.

Historically, LH has utilized vacant rental properties in disaster-affected areas for emergency housing. However, this approach proved insufficient in non-urban regions where available rental units were scarce. To overcome this limitation, LH, in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, launched the 'Disaster Response Modular Home Stockpile Project' in the latter half of last year.

When unexpected disasters occur, the most urgent need is to quickly provide a safe living space for victims who have lost their homes.

The corporation plans to complete the stockpile of 100 modular homes by the end of August. These units will be strategically distributed across the Sejong and Daegu regions for swift transportation. Once a disaster occurs and victim needs are assessed in coordination with local governments, the homes are slated for transport and installation within seven days.

LH has also developed a standardized design for these modular homes, incorporating expert advice from institutions like the National Disaster Safety Research Institute and the Korea Land and Housing Institute. The design prioritizes efficient installation, mobility, spaciousness, natural light, and accessibility for the elderly. Furthermore, provisions are being made for victims who wish to purchase the modular homes for continued residency, with necessary documentation to be provided for approval.
