Typhoon 'Dolphin' may affect Korea; Japan agency extends forecast radius to southwest of Jeju

Typhoon Dolphin, located in the sea east of Guam and moving westward, is raising concerns about its potential impact on the Korean Peninsula. While the Korea Meteorological Administration predicts Dolphin will traverse the East China Sea south of Jeju Island by August 10, the Japan Meteorological Agency's forecast cone extends to the waters southwest of Jeju. This wider projection leaves open the possibility of the typhoon moving northward.

As of August 5, the KMA reported that Dolphin was moving west at 26 km/h approximately 1,140 km east of Okinawa. The typhoon has a central pressure of 950 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 43 m/s, classifying it as a Category 3 storm. Its strong wind radius spans 450 km, with a gales-force wind radius of 140 km.

The forecast indicates Dolphin will be about 910 km east of Okinawa by the afternoon of August 5, and approximately 690 km east of the island by the morning of August 6. By the morning of August 7, it is expected to approach within 250 km east of Okinawa, and by the morning of August 8, it will be about 60 km southwest of Okinawa.

Following its passage near Okinawa, Typhoon Dolphin is projected to significantly slow its speed. The agency anticipates this reduced speed will continue at least until the morning of August 8.
