Liga MX: Historic match inaugurates Apertura 2026

The Mexican Liga MX Apertura 2026 season is set to begin with a significant double-header, highlighted by the revival of the first classic match in Mexican football history. Atlante, after years in the Second Division, makes its return to the top flight, marking a new chapter for the club and rekindling a historic rivalry.

Necaxa and Atlante will face each other on Thursday, July 16, at the Victoria Stadium in Aguascalientes. This encounter marks the first time the two teams have met in the First Division in nearly 15 years, with their last match occurring on April 16, 2011. During their time in the second division, the two clubs last met in the second leg of the Clausura 2016 Ascenso MX semifinals, where Necaxa emerged victorious with a 3-2 aggregate score over Atlante.

In addition to the historic clash, the opening day of the Apertura 2026 season will also feature a match between Xolos de Tijuana and Tigres, scheduled for 9:00 PM local time on Thursday. The league's return signifies the continuation of domestic football following the ongoing World Cup.

The return of Atlante, known as the "Potros de Hierro" (Iron Colts), to the top division is the tournament's most notable novelty.
