Lightning sparks wildfire in Sierra de San Carlos, Tamaulipas; crews work to contain it

A wildfire has broken out in the Sierra de San Carlos, Tamaulipas, Mexico, with authorities and local residents pointing to a lightning strike as the cause. The fire ignited in an area known as Cerro del Diente.

Personnel from the State Guard activated the Tamaulipas Plan to combat the blaze. Reports indicate it is a surface fire, and efforts to control it involve the State Guard, State Civil Protection, the National Forest Commission (Conafor), Public Works, and local volunteers and residents from the ejido Unión Morales.

Due to prevailing winds in the region, the fire remains active on a mountainside slope, producing a dense column of smoke. However, officials state that it does not currently pose a risk to the population. Firefighters and brigades are creating firebreaks to prevent the fire from spreading further into the mountainous area.

Constant monitoring of the fire's behavior is ongoing, with coordinated efforts to address active hotspots. The situation remains dynamic as crews work to contain the spread.
