Lin Pei-wei Embraces Manager’s Expectation to Succeed Chen Yung-chi

Uni-President Lions first baseman Lin Pei-wei responded to his manager’s call to eventually succeed veteran Chen Yung-chi with a three-hit performance and the game’s MVP award in a 3-0 win over the TSG Hawks.

These past few years, we have continued to give Pei-wei time and space, and we clearly told him that after Yung-chi retires, he must take seriously whether he can carry on the team’s strength.

Manager Lin Yueh-ping said the club had given the 22-year-old time and space while making clear that he needed to take responsibility for helping maintain the team’s strength after Chen retires. Lin Pei-wei said he had taken that expectation to heart.

This year I really did lack a sense of certainty, but I knew the problem, as did the team’s coaches. I needed to watch more pitches and identify pitch types, and now I feel more confident distinguishing balls from strikes.

He added that Chen had told him he had ability but lacked confidence. Lin Pei-wei said he has recently worked on recognizing pitch types and distinguishing balls from strikes, and now feels more confident at the plate.

Last year the manager already told me that senior player Yung-chi might only play for a few more years and that I needed to grow quickly. Yung-chi also reminded me that I was not bad, but simply lacked confidence.
