LINE users warned: Recent notification about phone number binding is not a scam

LINE users are being alerted to a recent notification requiring them to bind their phone numbers by the end of 2026, with some fearing it might be a scam. However, the messaging platform has confirmed these alerts are legitimate and are being sent from official LINE system accounts, identifiable by a green shield icon and the name 'LINE'.

The notifications are primarily aimed at users whose LINE accounts are exclusively linked to Facebook. These users are being urged to bind their phone numbers and set a password before the December 31, 2026 deadline. LINE also recommends binding Apple or Google accounts for added security and easier account recovery if compromised.

LINE explained that this measure is due to adjustments in its account system. Previously, the platform allowed users to create and log in to LINE accounts using only their Facebook credentials. However, LINE stopped supporting new account creation via Facebook in 2020 and ended Facebook login support in January 2024. Consequently, older accounts that rely solely on Facebook are now being prompted to update their security by linking a phone number.

LINE also clarified that some users might receive a different type of notification, which is a regular 'account check-up' reminder for users with incomplete account settings. These messages come from an official LINE system account named 'Service Messages', also marked with a green shield. The company stressed that phone numbers are a fundamental binding requirement for LINE accounts, with each number usable for only one account.
