Jorge Messi, the father of global soccer icon Lionel Messi, has passed away at the age of 68. He died Friday night at a medical clinic in Rosario, Argentina, following a prolonged illness, his family confirmed to Reuters.

During his final months, Jorge Messi divided his time between a medical center in Rosario and his home. He was consistently accompanied by his wife, Celia, and their children, Rodrigo, Matias, and Maria Sol. Lionel Messi, 39, had spent time with his father after the recent World Cup before returning to his club, Inter Miami, where he resumed playing just a week prior.
