Lippo Malls Expands Clean Energy Use with Rooftop Solar at Sun Plaza Medan

Lippo Malls Indonesia (LMI) is expanding its commitment to renewable energy by activating rooftop solar power generation at Sun Plaza Medan. This move marks the fifth mall within the LMI network to integrate solar energy, following installations at Lippo Mall Cikarang, Lippo Plaza Kramat Jati, Lippo Plaza Batu, and Lippo Plaza Kendari.

The company has allocated an investment equivalent to approximately Rp11.6 billion for the development of rooftop solar power systems at Sun Plaza Medan and Lippo Plaza Kendari throughout 2026. The Sun Plaza system alone is anticipated to generate up to 810 MWh of renewable energy annually, meeting about 2.5% of the mall's yearly electricity needs. This is projected to yield energy cost savings of around Rp130 million per year.

Beyond reducing conventional electricity consumption, the rooftop solar installation at Sun Plaza is estimated to cut carbon emissions by 640 to 729 tons of CO2 per year. This reduction is comparable to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 29,000 to 33,000 trees. Santiwati Basuki, Chief Marketing Officer of LMI, stated that the adoption of rooftop solar power is integral to the company's strategy of embedding ESG principles into its business operations.

LMI plans to continue evaluating opportunities for renewable energy technologies across its portfolio to support long-term carbon emission reduction targets. The Sun Plaza installation also reinforces Medan City's position as a growing adopter of sustainable building practices.
