Lithuania braces for summer storms and heatwaves, discusses AI development

Lithuania is navigating a challenging summer, marked by intense heatwaves and the onset of storm season. Temperatures have soared above 30 degrees Celsius in many areas, raising health concerns and prompting discussions on safety measures. Simultaneously, thunderstorms are causing disruptions, particularly to the electricity supply.

Experts are set to address these issues on Delfi's "Delfi diena" program. Oleg Mackevič, a specialist from the Gambling Supervision Service and a psychologist, will discuss the link between video games, particularly "loot boxes" and "skins," and gambling addiction. Mindaugas Papečkis from Energijos skirstymo operatorius (ESO) will explain the causes of power outages during storms and the typical restoration times. Liucija Vaitkevičiūtė, head of the Emergency and Urgent Care Department at Santaras Clinics, will provide guidance on how to stay safe during extreme heat and avoid common mistakes.

In parallel, Lithuania is part of a broader European initiative to foster technological independence. The European Commission's latest report highlights the continent's ambition to become a leader in artificial intelligence and chip manufacturing, rather than just a consumer. Marius Vaščega, head of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania, will offer insights into Europe's progress and challenges in this technological race, and Lithuania's specific role within it.
