Lithuania: Defense Ministry and Birštonas Sign Agreement for Infrastructure Development

The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence (KAM) and the Birštonas municipality have signed an agreement to explore opportunities for developing infrastructure that supports national defence objectives. This collaboration aims to leverage real estate and infrastructure to meet the goals of the national defence system.

Birštonas has a long history as a spa resort, professional specialists, suitable equipment, and environment. One of the possible directions of cooperation is rehabilitation services for soldiers, for whom it is important after missions and operations that rehabilitation is of high quality and available on time. Meanwhile, for the Birštonas municipality, this would mean new jobs and investments.

One key area of potential cooperation is the provision of rehabilitation services for soldiers in Birštonas. Minister Arvydas Kauno highlighted the town's long history as a spa resort, its professional specialists, and suitable environment. He stated that offering quality and timely rehabilitation services to soldiers returning from missions and operations is a priority. This initiative could also lead to new job opportunities and investments for Birštonas.

Birštonas Mayor Nijolė Dirginčienė expressed optimism about the agreement, viewing it as a new avenue for cooperation that could benefit both soldier rehabilitation and the resort's development. She emphasized Birštonas's extensive experience in treatment and rehabilitation, along with its skilled professionals, making it well-suited to support soldiers' recovery. The mayor also sees this as an opportunity to attract new investments, create jobs, and enhance the resort's services and infrastructure, ultimately benefiting the Birštonas community and the soldiers themselves.

We are a resort with many years of experience in treatment and rehabilitation and professional specialists, so we see real opportunities to use this for the rehabilitation of soldiers as well. At the same time, it is an opportunity to attract new investments, create jobs, strengthen the resort's services and infrastructure.

According to KAM, the experiences of both Lithuanian and foreign militaries show that army activities in various regions can stimulate local economies. This includes increasing demand for services, creating new employment, and driving infrastructure investment.
