Lithuania Needs More Than Drones: The Case for Black Hawk Helicopters

Lithuania is bolstering its defense capabilities with the arrival of UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, a move that Arvydas Pocius argues is essential despite the current focus on drones. While drones excel at reconnaissance and precision strikes, Pocius contends that traditional military aviation, including helicopters, remains vital for troop transport, medical evacuation, and logistical support.

The Black Hawk helicopters offer significant advantages, capable of transporting eleven fully equipped soldiers, accommodating four to six stretchers for medical evacuations, and carrying up to 4,100 kg of ammunition and supplies. Their versatility extends to supporting infantry, conducting search and rescue missions, assisting civilian authorities during disasters, fighting fires, and rapidly transporting donor organs. This multi-role capability makes the Black Hawk a crucial asset for Lithuania's defense.

Drones have changed the battlefield, but they have not replaced helicopters, transport aviation, fighter jets, or air defense.

Acquiring these helicopters also enhances Lithuania's interoperability with neighboring NATO countries like Poland, Sweden, Denmark, and Latvia, which also operate Black Hawks. The extensive U.S. military fleet of thousands of Black Hawks ensures well-developed logistics, spare parts supply, and crew training, benefiting Lithuania as a new operator.

Pocius emphasizes that Lithuania's defense strategy must be multifaceted. In wartime, roads and bridges can be quickly destroyed, disrupting civilian traffic and necessitating rapid aerial troop deployment and supply. The Black Hawks are vital for reinforcing border areas, moving special operations forces, evacuating civilians, and maintaining communication lines between isolated units, particularly in strategic areas like the Suwałki Corridor.

He further explains that drones and traditional aircraft are not competitors but rather complementary assets. Drones are ideal for intelligence gathering and targeting, while helicopters handle heavier tasks like troop movement and large-scale resupply. The future of defense lies in "manned-unmanned teaming," where piloted aircraft and drones operate as an integrated system, maximizing efficiency and effectiveness.
