Lithuania offers extra university points for military service completion

The Lithuanian Armed Forces are reminding high school graduates that completing mandatory military service can earn them an extra 0.5 competition point for university admissions. This benefit is available to those who have completed their service and mark it in the LAMA BPO system. However, applicants must remember to declare this themselves, as the military does not automatically transmit this data.

According to the current admission procedure to higher education institutions, individuals who have acquired basic military preparedness are awarded an additional 0.5 competition point.

This incentive aims to encourage military preparedness. The armed forces clarified that individuals completing their mandatory service by the end of August can still qualify. Their cases will be individually assessed to confirm their eligibility for the bonus point. The same applies to those who have achieved military preparedness through alternative paths, including cadet studies, professional military service, or extended service in the national defense volunteer forces.

It is important to note that the Lithuanian Armed Forces do not automatically provide LAMA BPO with information about individuals who have completed mandatory initial military service, so the applicant must indicate this fact themselves.

Recent data indicates a growing interest in military service. In the first quarter of this year, nearly 1,100 individuals without prior military training applied for service. Over 43% opted for voluntary non-permanent service, while more than 33% applied for mandatory initial service. Another 24% chose to complete basic military training courses. These figures highlight a trend towards increased engagement with military roles, whether voluntary or mandatory.

They can also indicate in their application that they have acquired basic military preparedness. The Lithuanian Armed Forces will evaluate each case individually and, if it is determined that the service has been successfully completed within the specified period, will confirm the right to an additional competition point.
