Lithuania's 'Things Yard' sharing network marks six years of success

The "Daiktų kiemas" (Things Yard) station network, an initiative by the Šiauliai Regional Waste Management Center (ŠRATC), promotes a culture of sharing and responsible consumption in Lithuania. The program, now six years old, encourages the reuse of items, contributing to a circular economy and fostering community spirit.

Currently, there are 10 "Daiktų kiemas" stations operating across various municipalities in the Šiauliai region. These stations are located at ŠRATC's large-item waste collection sites. While items can be dropped off on any of the sites' working days, they are available for collection only on Thursdays. This designated day offers a prime opportunity for residents to discover needed items or bring in unwanted goods.

Over its six-year operation, the initiative has seen significant success, with over 258,000 items finding new homes instead of ending up in landfills. Jurgita Udrienė, a senior specialist overseeing the program, noted the growing engagement from residents and communities, indicating a strengthening culture of sharing in the region. She invited those who haven't yet visited to experience the joy of sharing and discovery.

The "Daiktų kiemas" concept has expanded beyond simple drop-off and pick-up points. The Šiauliai station has become a venue for themed swap events, such as back-to-school exchanges for school supplies and "holiday item" swaps in December. These events not only help families prepare for the academic year more sustainably but also integrate into the broader cultural programming of the city, demonstrating how sharing can become a festive tradition.

Furthermore, the sharing idea is actively promoted at various public events, festivals, and educational sessions. "Daiktų kiemas" has become a popular feature at city celebrations, botanical garden events, and festivals like the Žagarė Cherry Festival. The initiative is also increasingly being implemented within communities themselves, with schools, organizations, and community centers adopting the model.
