Lithuania sees exceptional rainfall, exceeding August norms by over 250%

Lithuania is experiencing an unusual weather pattern, with meteorologists reporting record-breaking rainfall for August. Some regions have been drenched by more than 250% of their typical monthly precipitation. Meteorologist Gytis Valaika noted that areas including Upyna, Tryškiai, and Užventis received over 2.5 times the usual August rainfall.

This exceptional precipitation occurred between August 1st and 26th. Despite the early month downpours, the weather forecast for the upcoming days suggests a return to drier conditions. Forecasters predict brief showers on Wednesday, with light winds and temperatures ranging from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. Thursday and Friday are expected to be rain-free, with temperatures gradually warming into the low to mid-20s Celsius.

The heavy rains have also impacted the hydrological situation. As of August 26th, water levels in most rivers across the country are fluctuating, primarily decreasing. However, the Leitė River near Kūlynai is still experiencing flood levels, with the critical threshold at 245 cm. Hydrologists anticipate further decreases in water levels. Water temperatures in rivers range from 13-22°C, while lakes are between 17-19°C, and the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea are around 18-19°C.
