Lithuania survey: Public supports universal conscription, including for women under certain conditions

Lithuanian public opinion strongly favors expanding universal conscription, with a significant majority expressing readiness for its implementation within the next decade. A recent survey reveals that 76% of residents would support lifting current restrictions by 2030, and a notable 51% are keen on seeing it enacted as soon as possible.

Tomas Godliauskas, head of the "Universal Defense" association, highlighted the demographic consistency of this support, noting it spans various societal segments including urban and rural populations, men and women, and individuals with different educational backgrounds and income levels. "We see a positive trend for Lithuania – a demographically unified view," Godliauskas stated.

The latest public opinion survey shows that residents are ready and expect decision-makers to implement a broader model of universal conscription within the next three years compared to what is currently in place in Lithuania. Public favorability towards the rapid implementation of a universal conscription model is high, encompassing various societal groups, and is consistent across all regions and cities. This is a significant public signal to the state.

While overall support is high, nuances emerge across age groups. Older respondents show a greater inclination towards faster implementation, whereas those aged 18-29 are slightly less enthusiastic, with 41-45% favoring prompt action and 16-19% opposing universal conscription.

The survey also explored the inclusion of women in military service. A majority of respondents, over 64%, view women's service positively, especially when it is voluntary and offers diverse roles. Nearly 13% agree that women should serve under the same conditions as men, contrasting with 35% who oppose women's conscription. Among women surveyed, over 48% support integrating women into the universal conscription model through expanded voluntary service options.
