Lithuanian Basketball Federation backs coach Kurtinaitis despite team's struggles

The Lithuanian Basketball Federation (ALK) has opted to retain the current coaching staff for the men's national team, led by Rimas Kurtinaitis, following a period of intense review after a disappointing showing in World Cup qualifiers. The decision comes after ALK leaders met with the coaching staff and team manager Linas Kleiza to discuss the reasons behind the team's struggles.

We received resignation statements from R. Kurtinaitis and T. Pačėsas on July 8. But I was not in a hurry to make a decision – we looked critically at the situation. We had a 4-5 hour conversation with the coaches and realized that time was needed. We were all responsible in this situation – we were looking for the best option. Therefore, we asked for time until the 24th.

ALK President Mindaugas Balčiūnas announced that despite receiving resignation statements from Kurtinaitis and his assistant Tomas Pačėsas on July 8, the federation took time to critically assess the situation. After extensive discussions, the ALK concluded that Kurtinaitis and Pačėsas would continue their duties. Balčiūnas expressed the federation's "full confidence" in Kurtinaitis, citing his past successes, including a good win-loss record and effective team assembly, despite recent difficult losses.

The search for a potential replacement proved challenging, as several prominent figures declined the opportunity. Darius Songaila and Dainius Adomaitis, who had publicly expressed interest or were considered candidates, both opted not to take the helm. Giedrius Žibėnas, currently without a coaching position, also did not take on the role. Balčiūnas confirmed that offers were extended to Songaila to join the coaching staff, but he requested time to consider.

We have a plan for the nearest window. I submitted a proposal to the VK. Everyone has their own perspective – to scold, to criticize. But in such moments, the national team mobilizes. It was decided unanimously that we give full confidence to R. Kurtinaitis.

Balčiūnas acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that Kurtinaitis himself needed time to make a decision. He assured that the team has a plan for the upcoming qualifying window and that the coach will determine the core of the team. Despite uncertainties surrounding player availability, such as Jonas Valančiūnas potentially missing the next window, Balčiūnas remains optimistic about the team's ability to assemble a competitive squad under Kurtinaitis's leadership.
