Lithuanian Conservatives Propose Generators Over More Power Cables

Lithuania's conservative opposition party has put forward a proposal to halt the planned 2,000 kilometers of underground electricity line construction. Instead of continuing this work, they advocate for purchasing 150,000 generators for individual homes deemed at highest risk.

The conservatives argue that extending the power lines by up to 6,000 kilometers would cost 320 million euros. Their proposed generator program, however, would be significantly cheaper at 60 million euros. Under this plan, residents would pay about 100 euros for a generator, with the state or the electricity distribution company covering the remaining cost.

The conservatives say that generators would be useful for another reason. Even after additional work, some people would still be left without electricity. This can happen during extreme situations.

Beyond cost savings, the party highlights the practical benefits of generators. They contend that even with additional cable work, some homes might still lose power during extreme weather events. Furthermore, generators can operate independently of the main grid, a capability they deem crucial given the ongoing war in Ukraine and other geopolitical threats.

Both the Minister of Energy and the head of the electricity distribution company have responded positively to the proposal. They stated that the idea would be considered once electricity supply is restored. The proposal comes as Lithuania, like other European nations, seeks to bolster its energy security and resilience.
