Lithuanian Court Upholds Conviction for Abuse of Power Against Former Police Officer, Lawyer

Justice has been served, albeit after a lengthy process, as the Lithuanian Court of Appeal has upheld the conviction of three individuals for abuse of power. The ruling confirms the guilty verdict handed down by the Klaipėda Regional Court against V.V., a previously convicted individual, former police officer E.T., and ex-lawyer M.N. After reviewing the criminal case on appeal, the Lithuanian Court of Appeal upheld the first instance court's sentence of 3 years imprisonment for V.V. for this crime committed within an organized group. This sentence was combined by the first instance court with the 11 years and 6 months imprisonment sentence imposed by the Šiauliai Regional Court on February 3, 2023, and a final combined sentence of 13 years and 6 months imprisonment was imposed on V.V.

The origins of this case trace back to the discovery of a murdered young woman in Klaipėda in 2008. Initially, V.V. was a suspect, but his testimony shifted the focus to another individual, E.B. However, E.B.'s subsequent testimony and eventual confession led to V.V. being tried only for theft and concealment of a crime, ultimately being acquitted of murder. This complex investigative history highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement and the judiciary in establishing the truth.
