Lithuanian Democrats Identify Ministerial Candidates, Eye Coalition Agreement Signing

Lithuania's "Vardan Lietuvos" Democrats have finalized their choices for ministerial posts and are prepared to announce them once internal and presidential approvals are secured. The party's interim chairman stated that candidates for all three ministries under their purview have been identified.

"We have identified them, and as soon as we can, once those names are agreed upon, first with Mindaugas (Sinkevičius), and later with the president, we will certainly present them to the public immediately," he told ELTA. He expressed confidence that the nominees would introduce themselves and address public questions.

The party views the decision of Lithuanian Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius to lead the government as a positive step. The "Vardan Lietuvos" Democrats were among those advocating for a government reset and for Sinkevičius to assume leadership. His proposal to terminate the agreement with "Nemuno aušra" and engage in negotiations with the Democrats was supported by party members, indicating his strong community backing for the upcoming two-year term.

Discussions regarding the coalition agreement have progressed, with a signing ceremony anticipated for Thursday. The "Vardan Lietuvos" Democrats' party leaders met to discuss the agreement and the positions entrusted to them. They also provided input on the broader agenda, urging that issues such as education and environmental protection not be overlooked.

While acknowledging their specific ministerial responsibilities, the Democrats stressed their commitment to contributing to the overall work of the governing coalition and the government. "Democrats, without a doubt, will be ready to work together in the coalition, and of course, we perfectly understand the shared responsibility for the state," the interim chairman explained. He added that their parliamentarians, who were active in opposition, would maintain a similar level of engagement within the ruling coalition.
