Lithuanian diplomats gather in Vilnius to discuss security and foreign policy

Lithuania’s diplomatic network is being presented as a key instrument of national strength as the country’s ambassadors gather in Vilnius for their annual meeting. The Sept. 7-11 conference will focus on foreign policy, security and the country’s preparations to chair the Council of the European Union.

Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys will meet the ambassadors to discuss a changing international situation, the representation of Lithuanian interests abroad, support for Ukraine and the strengthening of transatlantic ties. National security, economic diplomacy and the expansion of strategic international partnerships will also be on the agenda.

“The network of our diplomats is the strength of the state, allowing us to effectively defend Lithuania’s interests, open new opportunities for our businesses and strengthen the country’s voice on the international stage,” Budrys said in a statement. He also said diplomats play an important role in ensuring Lithuania’s security, mobilizing support for Ukraine and preparing for the EU Council presidency.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas will attend the gathering at Budrys’ invitation. The diplomats are also scheduled to meet Lithuania’s senior leaders and representatives of other institutions.

Part of the program will focus on practical security issues. The ambassadors will visit the Border Guard School to discuss border protection and border-crossing procedures, followed by a visit to one of the country’s border crossing points. In Kėdainiai, they will meet municipal and business representatives and visit companies operating successfully there. Lithuania currently has 44 embassies, 10 consular offices and eight missions to international organizations.
