Lithuanian Forum 'Saugu' to Address AI's Impact on Truth and Journalism

The "Saugu" (Safe) forum, organized by Delfi, will tackle the increasingly complex issue of discerning truth in an era dominated by artificial intelligence. As AI-generated content proliferates online, the challenge of distinguishing authentic information from fabricated material becomes paramount, raising critical questions about the future of journalism.

It is obvious that artificial intelligence brings huge changes to the media and society as a whole. As technologies develop so rapidly, it is necessary not to waste time and agree on how we should use them to get more benefit than harm.

Rasa Lukaitytė-Vnarauskienė, Delfi's chief editor and the forum's moderator, highlighted the profound changes AI brings to media and society. She stressed the urgency of establishing guidelines for AI use to maximize benefits and minimize harm. The forum will explore strategies to help the public avoid falling victim to false or harmful AI-generated content, emphasizing the media's commitment to publishing reliable, verified information.

Participants will include VIlmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center; Justina Paulauskaitė, head of the Digital Space Supervision Group at the Communications Regulatory Authority; AI expert Tomas Sakro; and Delfi's "Fake Detector" journalist Monika Jakimčukė. They will delve into who creates truth today, whether it's technology itself or the people behind it, and discuss the responsibilities of media organizations and regulators in this evolving landscape.

We must consider how to help the public not get lost in the huge amounts of information and false content – the media adheres to its obligations to publish only reliable, verified information, but what can and must we do to strengthen trust in the media?
