Lithuanian Minister Meets Theater Over Actor Dispute; 'Macbeth' Canceled

Lithuanian Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys met with the leadership of the Juozas Miltinis Theater in Panevėžys to address the controversy surrounding actor Tadas Gryn and the cancellation of the play "Macbeth."

The most important message is that the theater is making every effort to reach an agreement, and I truly hope that the theater will succeed in reaching an agreement.

The theater's management admitted to potential communication missteps and a delay in initiating negotiations with Gryn. However, they assured the minister that active discussions are currently underway to reach an agreement, particularly concerning financial matters. The minister expressed hope for a resolution, emphasizing that the theater is making every effort to settle the dispute.

Despite these ongoing negotiations, the theater confirmed that "Macbeth" will not be included in this year's repertoire. The play's cancellation was previously announced after disagreements with Tadas Gryn, who was set to play the lead role. The theater's artistic director, Paulius Pinigis, stated that an initial proposal has been presented to Gryn, and they are open to involving the play's director if necessary to find a common solution. The theater is awaiting Gryn's response.

We are making every effort for negotiations. We have various options, we have informed the founder, the ministry, about them. We have promised to provide constant information on how these negotiations are progressing.

Minister Kairys noted that he had not personally discussed the situation with Gryn, nor had the Ministry of Culture received any formal complaints regarding the theater's internal affairs. He indicated a willingness to speak with the actor directly if needed. Meanwhile, the theater management assured that the rest of their planned repertoire for the upcoming season, set to begin in September, will proceed as scheduled.
