Lithuanian Minister Prepares 'Family Package' to Tackle Demographic Woes

Lithuania's Minister of Social Security and Labor, Inga Ruginienė, announced that a comprehensive "Family Package" is nearing completion. This initiative aims to tackle the nation's demographic challenges and enhance support for families raising children. Ruginienė stated that the package will be presented to the prime minister shortly and publicly revealed in early autumn. The proposed measures include a more flexible system for child-care leave with increased benefits, improved housing accessibility, and assistance for parents managing children's after-school activities and holidays. "When a child grows – it's also after-school activities, where to leave a young child who is already in school, but parents have to work?" the minister explained, highlighting the need for practical support. Ruginienė stressed that addressing demographic issues requires more than just social security measures. She pointed out that family decisions on the number of children are influenced by the security situation, infrastructure, healthcare accessibility, and other state policies. The package also intends to include provisions for dignified old age, particularly addressing the loss of work experience and reduced pensions for mothers of large families due to child-rearing. The exact budget for the package remains undetermined, pending finalization and approval. Ruginienė noted that various alternatives have been prepared for each proposed measure, meaning the final financial requirement will depend on the selected solutions. "Doing nothing, given such poor demographic figures, would be too great a luxury," she asserted, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The minister also indicated that the proposed measures should target not only vulnerable groups but also the middle class. The government has identified solving demographic challenges and stimulating birth rates as a key priority.
