Lithuanian Ministry Seeks to Aid Citizen Sentenced for Espionage in Kaliningrad

Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working to determine how it can provide assistance to a Lithuanian citizen who has been sentenced in Kaliningrad, Russia. The ministry has been tasked with investigating the situation and identifying potential support measures for the national.

Prime Minister M. Sinkevičius stated that the initial information is preliminary, but the ministry and other relevant services are already engaged in addressing the matter. "We will have more information a little later," he told journalists on Thursday. The ministry confirmed it is pursuing official information through diplomatic channels.

News of the sentencing emerged on Wednesday from the Russian news agency Interfax. The report indicated that the Lithuanian citizen received a 13.5-year prison sentence in a strict regime colony. Additionally, authorities confiscated the individual's phone and special equipment allegedly used in the commission of the crime.

The court reportedly found the accused guilty of collecting and transmitting information constituting state secrets within Russian territory between 2011 and 2024. This information was deemed potentially harmful to Russia's state security. The identity of the individual has not been disclosed.
