Lithuanian PM proposes Valdas Adamkus centenary photo exhibition

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has proposed a photography exhibition to honor former President Valdas Adamkus on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The exhibition, planned to be held at the Palace of the Grand Dukes in Vilnius, would showcase Adamkus's life and career.

"It is a pleasure to visit His Excellency the President, as probably the whole society knows that we are awaiting a beautiful anniversary – 100 years," the Prime Minister told journalists. She noted that various initiatives are planned, including a book publication, and anticipates more to come.

The Prime Minister highlighted the extensive archival material collected by photographer Antanas Sutkus. "A lot of archival material has certainly been gathered from his life, from his work, and that exhibition at the Palace of the Grand Dukes could be held on the eve of the anniversary, then travel from the Palace of the Grand Dukes, spread throughout Lithuania, and be exhibited in Kaunas and Klaipėda as well," she said.

Šimonytė expressed her satisfaction that the initiative, which she is supporting as a politician, has been well-received. "I am glad that the President has received this initiative, this proposal, which I am championing as a politician, positively and it will be realized," the Prime Minister stated.

Valdas Adamkus served as President of Lithuania from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2004 to 2009. He was first elected in 1998, defeating Artūras Paulauskas. After losing a re-election bid in 2003 to Rolandas Paksas, Adamkus won a snap election in 2004 following Paksas's impeachment.
