Lithuanian police seize 300,000 euros of contraband cigarettes in Rokiškis raid

Lithuanian authorities have uncovered a significant contraband cigarette operation, seizing nearly 300,000 euros worth of illegal tobacco products during a raid in Rokiškis district. The discovery was made by officers from the Utena County Chief Police Commissariat, who found various brands of cigarettes, including Marlboro Gold Original and Winston Blue, concealed beneath pellets and tarpaulins.

The operation led to the detention of an individual suspected of illegal possession of excise goods. This suspect has a prior conviction for a similar offense, highlighting a pattern of illicit activity. The investigation is being conducted by the economic crimes investigation unit and other divisions of the Utena County Police.

Authorities have initiated a pre-trial investigation into the illegal possession of excise-taxed goods. The suspect faces charges and has been subjected to two precautionary measures, with potential imprisonment of up to eight years for the offense. The investigation and prosecution are being overseen by a prosecutor from the Panevėžys Regional Prosecutor's Office.
