Lithuanian Police Warn Drivers of September Road Checks

Lithuanian police are warning drivers that September will bring a month of targeted road checks, as autumn traffic increases and children return to school.

From September 1 to 5 and September 24 to 25, officers will monitor whether drivers give way to pedestrians at crossings. They will also check pedestrians who cross or walk on roads where doing so is prohibited. Checks on electric micromobility vehicles, bicycles and electric mopeds are scheduled for September 6 to 8 and September 26 to 27.

Police will conduct sobriety checks from September 11 to 13, including tests for alcohol, drugs and other psychoactive substances. Safe Traffic Days will run from September 16 to 22. From September 28 to 30, officers will focus on dangerous and reckless driving, hazardous manoeuvres and illegal overtaking.

Police and volunteers will also monitor pedestrian crossings near schools during the first week of September, and in some places throughout the month. More than 400 volunteers are expected to take part in about 50 Lithuanian cities. They will help younger pupils cross roads, watch driver behaviour and check sobriety.

Police highlighted common driver mistakes around September 1, including overtaking a vehicle stopped at a crossing, failing to stop for a pedestrian approaching a crossing, parking on or too close to a crossing, using a phone while driving and speeding in residential areas near schools. “On the road, responsible behaviour from each of us is important.
