Lithuanian politicians discuss data leak, call for accountability

Lithuanian politicians are grappling with a significant data leak that may have compromised sensitive information belonging to intelligence and national defense officials. The incident has sparked debate about data protection and accountability within government institutions.

I think data protection is very important, but apparently, leadership changes, attitudes, and other things created conditions where protection was not at a sufficient level. I think the current decision for the head to resign and seek new solutions is the correct decision.

J. Olekas, a politician, stated that while data protection is crucial, leadership changes and other factors may have led to inadequate security. He believes the current head of the "RC" should resign, calling it the "correct decision" to seek new solutions. Olekas emphasized the need for rapid technical and administrative measures to prevent third parties from accessing and potentially influencing Lithuanian citizens through the leaked data.

Agnė Širinskienė, a member of the "Vardan Lietuvos" faction, expressed concern that information about the leak was allegedly withheld from the public since early May, when it was reportedly passed to law enforcement. She questioned whether affected officials have been informed and if adequate security measures have been implemented. Širinskienė also raised questions about why the head of the "RC" was targeted when the breach occurred through the Migration Department, suggesting both institutions were victims.

Indeed, if the object of the attack was intelligence and national defense system officials, then the situation is truly worrying. Of course, it is even more surprising that everything only came to light thanks to journalists. As we understand now, the information was being hidden since the beginning of May, because it was then transferred to law enforcement.

Ligita Girskienė, from the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, suggested the information attack might have been premeditated and possibly involved forces hostile to Lithuania. She noted that intelligence officers' data, and potentially politicians' sensitive information, may have been leaked. The General Prosecutor's Office has launched a pre-trial investigation, suspecting that over 600,000 registry extracts were leaked, causing a minimum damage of 111,000 euros.

This is a complex and threatening case. Now we will wait for the conclusions about what happened and why it happened. (...) I have heard that intelligence officers' data has also been leaked. (...) It is said that perhaps politicians' and other sensitive data could have been leaked. I believe that without the intervention of certain forces unfriendly to us, this event could not have happened – it was probably planned in advance.
