Lithuanian President to meet PM nominee Sinkevičius

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda is scheduled to meet with Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the designated candidate for prime minister, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, during the Joninės holiday. The meeting is set to take place at the Presidential Palace at 7 p.m.

Following this meeting, Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas stated that President Nausėda plans to submit Sinkevičius's candidacy to the Seimas (parliament) on Thursday. Lawmakers will then have a week to vote on the nomination. A simple majority of votes is required for approval. If confirmed, Sinkevičius will have 15 days to present his proposed cabinet and government program for parliamentary approval.

The current political developments stem from a coalition reshuffle. The XXth Government resigned after the ruling coalition was reformed. The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) leader, M. Sinkevičius, announced last week that he would lead the new cabinet. His name is listed as the nominee for prime minister in the new coalition agreement signed on Thursday.

Under the new coalition agreement, the Democratic Union 'For the Homeland' will oversee the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Energy. The Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union will retain control of the Ministries of Economy and Innovation, and Justice. Other ministries will be managed by the Social Democrats. The previous government, led by Inga Ruginienė, was appointed in August 2025 and sworn in September 2025. This marks the second government change of the current term.
