Lithuanian State Security Aware of Citizen's Russian Espionage Conviction

Lithuania's State Security Department (VSD) has acknowledged media reports regarding a Lithuanian citizen sentenced for espionage in Russia. The VSD stated that while the information is known, they are unable to provide public comments on the case.

Consular assistance for Lithuanian citizens abroad is handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the VSD's response to news agency ELTA. The VSD indicated that any further inquiries should be directed to the relevant ministry.

Russian media outlet Interfax reported the sentencing, stating the individual received a 13.5-year prison term in a strict regime colony. The court also ordered the confiscation of the individual's phone and special equipment allegedly used in the commission of the crime.

The court determined that the accused had been collecting and transferring information constituting state secrets within Russian territory from 2011 to 2024. This information, the court found, could have been used to harm Russia's state security. The identity of the individual has not been disclosed in the reports.
