Little energy and will for Idrija's tourist gem remediation

The "Rake" water channel in Idrija, Slovenia, a beloved local spot for walking and running, has been empty since December. A significant leak, causing damage to the channel and the adjacent path, led to its draining. Soške elektrarne Nova Gorica, the operator, has been seeking solutions for repairs, but the full remediation plan has been stalled by unforeseen expenses.

The company now plans to carry out only the most urgent repairs, aiming to ensure the channel can be refilled. Residents have expressed disappointment over the loss of the channel's cooling effect, especially during hot weather. The Idrija municipality, while only owning the path, is urging the operator to proceed with the work.

The area is a popular walking path today, so the broader public interest must be considered in planning future arrangements and an adequate level of safety must be ensured.

Soške elektrarne Nova Gorica highlighted the need to consider public interest and safety in future plans, noting the channel was originally covered with wooden floors. They are proceeding cautiously and responsibly. The process has been slow since the channel was drained in December; permits were obtained in February, but no significant progress has been made.

A tender for repairs attracted only one bid, which was double the estimated 25,000 euro cost. The company has not yet responded regarding a re-tender or selection. The hydroelectric power plant fed by the channel is also not operating, though its contribution to the company's overall energy production is considered minor. The channel, originally built for a mercury mine, is now a nature trail showcasing the area's geology and botany.
