Live: US strikes on Iran followed by Iranian retaliation in Jordan

The latest US strikes on Iran have quickly widened into a new exchange involving Jordan. Washington hit two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards then said they had attacked US military targets in Jordan.

CENTCOM spokesman Tim Hawkins said US forces acted after observing IRGC personnel preparing to launch rockets loaded with sea mines into the strategic waterway. The United States also said it had completed clearing international shipping lanes in the strait. The strikes marked the first confirmed US attacks on Iran in a month.

The Revolutionary Guards said their retaliation used ballistic missiles and drones. They said the attacks targeted technical and maintenance facilities, as well as aircraft positioned at two bases in Jordan. The Guards warned that “any hostile act will face even more powerful retaliation.”

Jordan’s army said on Monday that it had successfully destroyed eight missiles that entered its airspace, without specifying where they came from. Tehran said it had targeted US facilities at two bases in Jordan in response to the American bombardment of Larak.

The new strikes also affected oil markets. Brent crude rose 2.51% to $90.31 a barrel at about 22:20 GMT in Asian trading, while West Texas Intermediate gained 2.41% to $85.41. The United States is enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports and says it is prepared to protect commercial traffic through the waterway.
