Ljubljana Opens Temporary Bus Station with Improved Facilities

Ljubljana's temporary bus station officially commenced operations on Tuesday near Masaryk Street, marking a significant step in the redevelopment of the city's central transport hub. The new facility aims to provide a more organized and passenger-friendly experience.

The temporary station boasts 46 bus bays, a dedicated waiting area, and a ticket sales point equipped with five counters. Passengers can now purchase tickets using bank cards, a new convenience. Despite the relocation, schedules for intercity bus lines remain unchanged, and buses depart from the same bay numbers as before.

Our main goal was to complete the move before the start of the school year and allow passengers as much time as possible to adapt. The temporary bus station was designed with the passenger and multimodal mobility in mind. Passenger safety is significantly better catered for at the new location, as traffic and passenger areas are more clearly separated, and passengers have more space for safe boarding and alighting from buses.

Miha Tavčar, CEO of Nomago, the company managing Ljubljana's bus station, described the move as a challenging project undertaken amidst multiple large construction sites with tight deadlines. "Our main goal was to complete the move before the start of the school year and allow passengers as much time as possible to adapt," Tavčar stated. He emphasized that the temporary station was designed with passengers and multimodal mobility in mind, enhancing safety through clearer separation of traffic and passenger zones and providing more space for safe boarding and alighting.

The bus station is for many the first contact with Ljubljana – the place where they form their first impression of our capital upon getting off the bus. Dušan Mes, Director General of Slovenian Railways, noted the importance of the bus station as a first point of contact for many visitors to Ljubljana. "I am pleased that, despite it being a temporary station, it offers passengers, both domestic and foreign, a completely different and, above all, better, more pleasant experience, more space, better organized infrastructure, and more efficient traffic organization," Mes said.

Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Jernej Vrtovec called the opening a "long-awaited and important step" in organizing Ljubljana's central transport hub. Mayor Zoran Janković highlighted the project as a result of good cooperation between the state and Slovenian Railways, envisioning the area transforming into one of the most beautiful parts of the city.
