Locally made IED caused explosion injuring family in Bangladesh, police say

An explosion in Barishal's Bakerganj upazila on Monday morning injured three members of a family. Police have identified the cause as a locally made improvised explosive device (IED) following an initial investigation by a bomb disposal unit.

Barishal Superintendent of Police AZM Mostafizur Rahman stated, "Based on the preliminary examination, the bomb disposal unit confirmed that it was an improvised explosive device. It was locally made." A four-member bomb disposal unit secured the scene and collected samples.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. in Dudhal Mou village. The injured are Hanufa Begum, 55, her daughter Iti, 19, and Hanufa's grandson Fahim, 14. Relatives reported that the explosion happened near sandbags in front of the house as the family was escorting Fahim to his coaching class.

The three victims received initial treatment at the Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal. Doctors later referred them to Dhaka for further treatment, and they were transported by ambulance. Police had initially been unable to determine the cause of the blast, and the area was cordoned off.
