Lockdown ordered in northern Manitoba First Nation after fatal shooting

Pimicikamak Cree Nation, a First Nation community located in northern Manitoba, has implemented a lockdown after a fatal shooting prompted an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Chief David Monias announced the lockdown early Saturday, confirming one death resulting from what he termed a "serious incident involving gunfire." The RCMP's Major Crime Services is leading the investigation. In response to the incident, Treaty and Indian Days celebrations have been indefinitely postponed. Community members have been advised to remain inside their homes, secure doors and windows, keep children indoors, and refrain from opening their doors to unknown individuals. Chief Monias emphasized that the lockdown is a precautionary measure to ensure community safety while the police conduct their investigation. He urged residents to comply with the lockdown orders, noting that some individuals were not adhering to the restrictions. Monias also stated that the victim's body would be arriving soon and requested that residents respect the family's privacy, limiting attendance at the upcoming funeral to immediate relatives. He further encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity directly to the police and to avoid spreading unconfirmed information on social media, stressing the importance of avoiding a "conspiracy of silence."
