Lockheed Martin Unveils Cheaper Patriot Missile

American defense giant Lockheed Martin has introduced a new interceptor missile for the Patriot air defense system, promising a significant cost reduction. The new missile, dubbed PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector (ACE), is slated to cost less than half the price of the currently used PAC-3 MSE interceptor.

According to U.S. Army budget documents, a single PAC-3 MSE missile currently costs approximately $4 million. Lockheed Martin announced that the new ACE missile would be priced below $2 million per unit. This announcement was made during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom.

Lockheed Martin plans to commence production of the new missile within 36 months, collaborating with industrial partners in the United States and Europe. Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, stated, "American and allied soldiers need a solution that is combat-proven and cost-effective."

The war in Ukraine has dramatically increased demand for Patriot systems, making them one of the most sought-after air and missile defense systems globally. Kyiv has repeatedly highlighted the effectiveness of Patriot batteries against Russian ballistic missiles, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy frequently appealing for more launchers and interceptors. The demand surge, also fueled by exchanges between Iran, Israel, and the U.S., has exposed limitations in Western defense manufacturing capacity.

In response to rising demand, production of Patriot components is rapidly increasing. Boeing, responsible for producing guidance sets for PAC-3 missiles, boosted its output by 30% last year and anticipates similar growth this year. The company produced 650 guidance sets in 2025 and aims for 850 this year. Lockheed Martin plans to produce 650 PAC-3 missiles in 2026, with agreements in place to raise annual Patriot missile production to 2,000 units by 2030.
