Loneliness is common and stigmatized among Norwegian students, study finds

Loneliness is a widespread yet often unspoken challenge faced by students in Norway, with many finding their university years to be isolating rather than the anticipated best time of their lives. As the new academic year begins and fadderuker (orientation weeks) commence, the reality of loneliness looms for a significant portion of the student population.

Recent data highlights the prevalence of this issue. A survey conducted last year by Sentio on behalf of the Norwegian Students' Union and Khrono revealed that approximately seven out of ten Norwegian students experience varying degrees of loneliness. Further underscoring this concern, the Student Health and Well-being Survey (SHoT) from 2022 indicated that 29 percent of students reported missing companionship.

New statistics on student well-being are expected in mid-September, which will provide updated insights into the current situation. In response to these findings, a psychologist is set to share advice on how students can effectively manage and cope with feelings of loneliness during their time at university.
