Low Water Levels in Elbe River Contrast With Full Schweriner See

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany – Germany is grappling with low water levels in several rivers, including the Elbe, attributed to the summer's heatwaves and insufficient rainfall. Environment Minister Till Backhaus stated that approximately three-quarters of the state's river gauges are currently below average levels for this time of year.

However, Backhaus emphasized that the situation in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is not as dire as in other major European rivers. "The situation is not comparable to the dramatic situation on the Rhine and Danube," he noted. While low water is typical for this season, the current conditions are a consequence of persistent heat and minimal precipitation.

The Elbe River is particularly affected. At the Boizenburg gauge, water levels recently measured 47 centimeters, with projections for the coming days to reach 50 to 51 centimeters. This is significantly below the average water level of 183 centimeters. Similarly, the Dömitz gauge shows 20 centimeters, expected to drop slightly, compared to a normal level of 178 centimeters. Due to these low levels, the Elbe ferry "Tanja" operating between Darchau and Neu Darchau has suspended its service.

In stark contrast to the Elbe's plight, Schweriner See lake boasts a healthy water level. According to the ministry, the lake's water level is currently seven centimeters above the targeted level for August, allowing for enjoyable conditions for swimmers.
